This led to many formal celebrations in both the UK and India, many of which continue today. A dressing gown that had belonged to her husband Albert who had died 40 years earlier, was placed by her side, along with a plaster cast of his hand, while a lock of John Brown's hair, along with a picture of him, was placed in her left hand concealed from the view of the family by a carefully positioned bunch of flowers. Queen Victoria went to visit her ailing mother, the Duchess on 15 March 1861, at Frogmore House. Preserved at Windsor in six volumes, the Duchess of Kent’s letters are bound in black morocco, (A. N. Wilson, 246) the first two of which have the memorial words picked in gold: ‘LETTERS FROM DEAR MAMA’. Prince Albert, the beloved husband of Queen Victoria, died in 1861 at an early age of 42, plunging then British Monarch into a deep mourning that lasted for the rest of her life. The queen had refused to be embalmed, so they scattered charcoal on the floor of the coffin to combat the smell and absorb the moisture. There were only a few days left to organise the ceremonial. Nicknamed Bertie, Edward was seen as a fashionable socialite before becoming king. They summoned the royal dukes, the kaiser and the new king to lift her body into the coffin. The Queen’s grief for her mother must surely have been exacerbated by the recognition of the Duchess of Kent’s love for her, as revealed in her private papers, hence the terrible anguish of not only the loss of her mother, but of all those lost years. When all was ready, the coffin was closed and then carried to the dining room where it was covered with the Union Jack (Britain's flag) while the body lay in state. A small detail sometimes overlooked, is that Princess Victoria in turn, clasps a miniature of her dead father in her hand. Queen Victoria died at the age of 81 on 22 January 1901 at 6.30 pm. Her death stunned the nation. How awful… The constant crying was a comfort and relief… But oh! Thanks! You would think that the English Monarchy had [not] been buried since the time of Alfred.”. According to the Mausolea & Monuments Trust, (retrieved 13/3/19), the mausoleum was inspired loosely by Bramante’s Tempietto of San Pietro in Montorio.  She was dressed in a white dress and her wedding veil. This period also marked the establishment of Britain's Welfare State. All of this could be seen and heard as the press rushed down to the harbour to break the news to the world. Her children squabbled, her doctors quarrelled, and the public were misled and kept in the dark. Above the mausoleum's doors, Queen Victoria had inscribed, "Vale desideratissime. The Duke of York was suddenly struck down with a dangerous illness and the royal undertaker arrived from London but forgot to bring the coffin.
The cortege remained in the harbour overnight and proceeded by train to London’s Victoria station in the early hours of 2 February. Queen Victoria ordered an inscription to be engraved on this bracelet, which was later placed in the Blue Room at Windsor Castle, where the Prince Consort had died: ‘Last gift / from my / beloved & adored Albert / ordered by him / for Xmas 1861 / Given me by Alice / Jan. 1st. Royal Collection Enterprises Ltd, 9) which had been either given or received by members of the Royal Family, a project which Queen Mary continued involvement with, until her death in 1953.
Other descendants of the late Queen's paternal grandfather, King George III and their families: Wyllie depicts a scene during the funeral of Queen Victoria. Prince Albert, however, himself died on 14 December 1861, so Princess Alice gave it the Queen instead.
The wedding ring of the mother of her personal servant, John Brown, was placed on her finger; a photograph of Brown and a lock of his hair were laid beside her, along with Brown’s pocket handkerchief, all carefully hidden from view. As the Queen comments on her mother’s illness, it is perhaps poignant that she mentions the left arm of the Duchess. First interred in the Royal Vault at St George’s Chapel, the Duchess of Kent was eventually buried in a small, classical mausoleum in the grounds at Frogmore, above the lake, to the west of the House.
